Description
A Vintage Circa 1960, Obscure Promotional Brochure Highlighting Life in Los Alamos, New Mexico, produced by The United States Atomic Energy Commission ....This is an absolutely amazing and very rare vintage publication, which was obviously extremely well thought out and meticulously constructed in order to foster positive community growth in an early 1960’s Los Alamos. This town is most well known as being the location used for the Manhattan Project and ultimately, the creation site of the United States First Atomic Bomb. This full color brochure is loaded with detailed historical documentation, covering a vast array of material and abounding with super interesting color photographs, each with its own explicitly informative caption. Furthermore, there is a phenomenal five page panoramic photograph, located at the end of the booklet, which seems to be printed on a heavier stock paper with a special finish. Remarkably, this photograph was not taken from a plane, but rather from the top of a tree!
While this booklet may have a broad appeal to anyone interested in the more recent history of the Southwestern United States, it would seemingly be a downright gem, for anyone who is passionately connected to the history of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Interestingly, the overall professionalism of this small town promotional publication is very unique in it’s own right, as typically this type of presentation, would seemingly be well beyond the capabilities of a small town in 1960.
While this is obviously not an actual history book, it does however touch on more content than I had personally ever imagined when I initially found the book. Furthermore and rather surprisingly, despite the objectives of its authors, the presentation, while extremely positive, appears to focus on maintaining a realistic perspective of the town, as it addresses issues such as government owned real estate, housing shortages, the lack of public transportation and even touches on the scarcity of the population.
With that said, this is a promotional piece, which predominantly highlights the positive attributes of the town at the time, of which there were an abundance of areas to touch on....Some of the subjects explored, include education, transportation, culture, events, sports, the beautiful landscape, nature and the ethnicity of the population,
More specifically, there are references to, The Pajarito Plateau, The Peaks of the Jemez, The Rio Grande Valley / Valle Grande Volcano Crater, The Fields of The Pojoaque Valley, Native Americans of San Ildefonso performing the “Woman’s Calling Names Dance”, Pueblo Native Americans, Mesa School Children, new construction in Barranca Mesa, Mesa School Children and even a district championship playoff game between the Tucumari Rattlers and the Toppers from Los Alamos High... And by no means is this an exhaustive list, there is much, much more!
The brochure appears to be in “excellent” vintage condition, with only very minor signs of aging / wearing, primarily in the form of some very light creases. There are no missing pages, rips, tears, writing or damage, as the piece has been extremely well cared for and as a result, remains in absolutely beautiful condition.
The closed publication measures approximately 8 3/4“ by 12“ and contains roughly 30 pages or so, not including the five page panoramic photograph at the very end.
